Getting started with AI automation (without the overwhelm)

A plain-English starting point for business owners who know AI could help but have no idea where to begin. Here's how to find your first automation.

Most business owners we talk to are in the same spot: they know AI and automation could save them time, but there’s so much noise that they don’t know where to start. This guide is the starting point.

Start with the annoying stuff, not the exciting stuff

The best first automation is rarely the flashy one. It’s the small, repetitive task that quietly eats your week. Think about the work that:

  • You do the same way every single time
  • Follows clear rules (“if this, then that”)
  • Doesn’t need your judgement — just your time

That’s the sweet spot. Answering the same five questions, copying data between tools, chasing follow-ups, sending appointment reminders.

A simple way to find your first automation

Spend one week writing down every task that made you think “a robot could do this.” At the end of the week you’ll have a list. For each item, ask:

  1. How often does it happen? (Daily beats monthly.)
  2. How long does it take? (Add it up across a month.)
  3. How clear are the rules? (Fewer exceptions = easier to automate.)

The task that scores high on all three is where you start.

What “good” looks like

A good first automation should feel boring and reliable. You set it up once, it runs in the background, and you stop thinking about it. No dashboards to babysit, no daily check-ins. If it needs constant attention, it’s not done yet.

The goal isn’t to automate everything. It’s to hand off the work that doesn’t need a human, so you can spend your time on the work that does.

Where to go next

Once your first automation is running and you trust it, the next ones get easier — you start seeing opportunities everywhere. If you’d like a second pair of eyes, an AI Business Audit is exactly this exercise done with you: we map your workflows and point to the automations worth doing first.
